Update: Largemouths at Lisbon

Does the Hedon Torpedo work? Well I caught one fish with it in Washington State. Does it work at Lisbon, doesn’t seem like it. Then again catching bass at Lisbon seems to be different than other places. The only thing that has worked for catching Bass at Lisbon has been good ol nightcrawlers. Other than that, no dice.

I hit Lisbon on Friday and Saturday. I used the Heddon Torpedo in two sizes on two different days.  Long story Short, both were a failure. I am not sure what this means other than Lisbon is kind of a tough place for Largemouth. I still have to try it out at Boss pond and a few other fishing holes before I give an opinion. 

Anyway, I didn’t take any pictures of the fish I caught because I didn’t hook anything too impressive. Friday I hooked into a small largemouth and three decent sized crappie. I didn’t really feel like gutting and scaling so instead I simply caught and released. 

Sunday I took my dad out to the beehive (name for newest fishing hole). I ended up hooking into two small Largemouths  but once again, nothing too impressive. As much as I love hooking into some small fish, I really want a bigger fight so I need to hit the sac soon. Since Boss pond will be out of question for a while (different reasons) I am on the lookout for a new pond to catch some monster bass.

 
Well, three crappie and three largemouths would be it for this weekend! Not a great first fishing trip of the summer but at least i didn't get skunked!

Fall Bassing Action

I am a student of angling. I refuse to stop learning or feel that I have” arrived” to a point where I know everything. My goal as most of you know is to learn to catch every type of freshwater fish out there regardless of conditions, location, etc. So I have no shame in admitting when I don’t know how to do something. I ask questions, tons of them!

Enter Nick, The informative Fisherman. This guy is a veteran at this angling thing and I follow his videos religiously! Well Nick, like many of the great gentleman who follow this page, is more than willing to answer questions about fishing. Of course that means I often bother him with my fishing inquiries. 

Recently he explained to me how to catch bass during fall.  Soon after he explained it to the world and posted a video on this subject. I could give you an explanation but to be quite honest I couldn’t do it as well as Nick. So here is the video. 

So I took this information out to Boss pond and tried it out. Based on the advice I had received and the video I used a Rattle trap to get to the deeper parts of the water. I had a Strike King Red-Eyed Shad that I received in this Novembers Mystery Tackle box.  One of my buddies was using a Mepps Spinner size #3, another was using a top water jitterbug.  Out of the three of us I am the only one that caught a bass. 

After that I decided to switch it up and see if anything else worked so I did try out a top-water popper, and a couple of finesse techniques but they didn’t prove very successful. We didn’t do much better after that.

Wasn’t a very eventful day in terms of numbers but the fact that I hooked a bass this deep into fall was a step in a positive direction for me. Well that’s it for me. Please do check out Nicks Website: InformativeFirsherman, and his facebook page: Facebook IF. The guy is a genius!

Boss Pond

This weekend was a hot one. That means everybody and their mamas were on the river cooling off. That meant that every fishing spot on the river was either taken or had no shade and was therefore unbearable. So our fishing trip wasn't the best. I decided to try for salmon, casting out my Rattle trap about fifty times but no dice. I will continue my quest to catch my first salmon until the season is over and rest assured, I WILL catch a salmon!

So yesterday I had the day off and I decided to go out to boss pond and catch some largemouth bass.

We ended up getting to boss pond at about 6:00. I wanted to try a couple of newer lures I had and so as soon as I got there, I went to work!

I have a Rebel popper that I have been wanting to try out as well as a Storm WildEye Live Sunfish and a green Snag Proof Spin Frog Lure.

First up was the Rebel Popper which i threw in and began popping. It was only in may that I learned what exactly a popper was and how to use one. My brother in law taught me how they were used and from then, I knew i had to get some. So this is my first popper and as i was popping I saw a small bass come up and strike at it, but it wasn't hooked. Beautiful thing it is to see a bass strike at a top water lure!  After a few cast sure enough I had a fish on and i hooked into this 15.5 in 1.5 lber.

So next I decided to try with the snag proof frog. One thing I liked about it, it truly is snag proof. I was throwing this sucker into weed beds, on top of the weed filled areas of the ponds , around cattails and the sucker kept coming back! Unfortunately I did not catch anything with this guy which was probably the lure i used the most during my two hours at the pond.


last I decided to use my Storm wildeye sunfish. I had VERY low expectations for this lure since I bought the 3-pack on a 50% discount. But as I said in the PAST  its not the price, but whether or not it catches fish.

On my third cast with this lure, it was fish on! This little sucker was a fighter. He was jumping out of the water, running hard to get away, and at one point he even went under a log (or something else underwater) and it felt like the fish had gotten my line snagged, I was disappointed, but i decided to loosen a little line a little to see if my line was really tangled or if he had just tangled up my line. I waited for e second and there was no movement. Next thing I know he takes off again and I simply let the line hold him until he got tired. I then reeled him in and noticed that this boy was a true fighter with a busted lip! wonder how he got that? well, either way I am now practicing catch, picture, release with my Largemouths and as you can see, "the warrior" had battle wounds and was released to fight another day! The fish was 18 in. 2.5 lbs.
