All Weekend Fishing!

This weekend was a great one as are all weekends in which all three days are fishing days. Friday We took some beers and stogies out to the pits to see how they were hitting. Unfortunately they are still slow. 

I did manage a decent bass on a small crankbait and also another small bass and a panfish. The panfish was interesting because it was the first panfish I have ever caught out there. In all still a great day. The pits aren’t hitting the same way they did in the past but it is slowly but surely getting better out there.

Total: 2 Largemouth bass + 1 green sunfish = 3 Fish

Saturday I went river fishing with Ol Pops and my nephew. My nephew doesn’t have the patience for fishing which really stinks because he has a hot hand and he doesn’t even know it! First blood was him with a 10 inch striper. Second was me with another little striper and pops ended up catching one as well. Biggest was a 16 incher that my nephew ended up catching on my rod while I went to net one up for pops…. And Pops’ fish ended up getting away! So none of us got skunked and my nephew caught the most and biggest fish.

Total: 1 Striper

On Sunday night we decided to hit Walter Pond with IPAs and Stogies in hand. It was hot and fishing was slow. We barely got into 3 fish and that was with a lot of effort on our part. I expected there to be a good topwater bite but that didn’t happen either. Even though the moon was almost full we still didn’t get many bites in general… 

Total: 2 bass

Well, that’s pretty much it for now. Hope summer is going well for my fellow bloggers.

Another Bulk Report!

Once Again, in order to catch up, I will be doing this in bulk.

5/16/15 – Ol’ Pops finally picked up his license so we took our river rods out to the Sac. A year ago I was slaying them in this exact spot but this year it was considerably slower. Only two came to hand. One of them being 15 in. or so. My dad ended up catching a shaker as well.

Total: 2 Striper

5/19/15 – We ended up going to check the pits to see how the fishing was. The water was indeed lower and I was able to land my first bass this year out of the pits. Although he was a little guy, he was proof that soon enough the spot will be ready for the crazy action we were having last year.

Afterwards we went to Legendary pond and had another legendary day. We used spinning and fly rods to yank a good number of bass out of there. In addition, Jeremy (along with some fine coaching from yours truly) was able to get into his first bass on the fly! I was pretty proud!

Total: 16 Largemouth Bass

5/25/15 – Bored with the same spot and curious about what else was at Legendary pond, we decided to access another side of Legendary pond. So after a good walk down some hills we went to work on the south bank of Legendary pond. It turned out to be even more legendary that the opther side. Watermelon and Chartreuse worms did the trick with the spinning rod and as it got darker, they weren’t touching anything but purple and white wooley buggers! Needless to say I got some nice ones on the fly!In addition, here is a picture of one bass that I caught which was either deformed or something took a big bite out of him at a younger age!

Total: 27 Largemouth Bass

5/29/15 – I didn’t end up making it out to Ditch pond in March/April when the fishing is best but I made it out on this day and brought moises along. We have caught bass there before and Moises is only into bass fishing. He managed to get into a couple. Meanwhile nothing was biting on my minnows and that was a pity. In fact, most of them ended up dying. I did get into a small bass and as the night wore on I tossed a minnow over to a rocky bank and finally got into a nice size crappie. Bites were scarce after that.

Total: 1 Crappie + 1 Largemouth Bass = 2 Fish

6/2/15 – We hadn’t been to walter pond in a while so we paid it a visit. The moss is getting pretty thick on top in our regular spot so we decided to walk around the pond and explore some different areas. I did manage to hook up with a couple bigger bass that I couldn’t drag across the mats so they got away. Another spot had less mosss so I went to work there. Once again, purple wooley buggers got the job done and I was able to get into 4 bass.

Total: 4 Largemouth Bass

 With this report I am all caught up but I have one trip from this weekend that I will report on soon and it was a fun one! 

Total Fish:  2 Striper + 1 Crappie + 48 Largemouth Bass = 51 Fish!

What a Difference a Weekend Makes!

I have two trips to talk about and the first one was a week ago. This was before the rains came and it got a bit colder down here in the valley.

Last Friday I set up a trip with Charles and when I got to his house he suddenly realized he “had something to do and would have to meet me out there.” Guess what happened? He didn’t show. I won’t be fishing with him much anymore. 

When I got out to the pond, I put on a Kastmaster and went to work. Nothing out of the ordinary, I had a quick 15 fish day. More or less about a fish every 3 casts. As usual I was hoping for something big but unfortunately it didn’t happen. Most of the fish were smaller but I did get a couple of 1 lbers and one of them was nice and chunky.

Enter a weekend with a little rain and cold temperatures. By Monday it was warmer again but there was in fact a cold chill in the air. I got together with Jeremy, the guy I met out at the pond when I went fishing with my dad. I was armed with my ugly stick but also decided to bring along Bone Crusher (my 8 wt.) and throw some of the cool flies That I bought from Justin over at Carf Outdoors. I will post about these flies later on in a different post. 

So we started and I quickly noticed a change. Normally it would only take me a few casts and I would have a fish on but it took a while. After a while I drew first blood and then I switched over to bone crusher and tied on a big baitfish pattern. I tossed them out but no strikes. After a while I tied on a black Wooley bugger and got into my first bass on the fly at the pits! 

It was getting darker but a little later I got into my second bass on the fly  and this was the biggest bass I have caught on the fly so far. I bought bonecrusher for larger bass so an 8 wt was a bit overkill for these smaller bass but it was still cool. My buddy Jeremy was pretty impressed with the fact I was a fly fisher but even more impressed with the fact I caught fish on the fly. I told him, “It’s what I do!”

 Even though I managed to catch fish on the fly, we could both tell it was slowing down quite a bit. What used to be a non-stop fish catching party became a slower fishing day but that was okay. We hung out and drank some beers and had a great time fishing.

Solo at the Pits

I seem to have a lot of friends that flake on me. Not really sure what is going on there. After Charles flaked on me last minute last Friday I took the trip to the pits by myself. I arrived with three new kastmasters. Two bright green and chrome and the other Chrome and a darker green. The chrome and dark green was a ½ oz lure and the others were identical 3/8 oz lures. I decided to try out the Chrome and dark green just to see if the fish liked it as well as the bright green. I ended up bringing my ugly stik which has 10 lb line on it, ready in case I got into the big one. 

I lit up a cigar, cast out my lure and as soon as my lure hit the water, I already had a fish on. A couple casts later there was another fish on. As it turns out the fish liked this lure better. I spotted a couple of big boys in the shallows but they weren’t in the mood to eat. Or maybe it was the fact that they could see a big guy tossing out a lure tied with heavy line that controlled their appetite. Either way, they wanted nothing to do with anything. 

 I continued to reel in fish after fish in the short amount of time I had so I put out my cigar for later. I was hoping for a big 7 lber or maybe even a 5 lber but unfortunately it did not happen on this day. At about 7:20 it started getting  dark  but they were still biting so I continued. The last fish of the day was also the biggest and it came in the most impressive fashion. I tossed the KM as far as I could with no bite and when it was within 2 feet of the bank at about 2 feet deep it smashed hard! I was hoping for something bigger but the 2 lber was still fun. 

After that I took the long quiet walk back to the car. I finished my cigar while looking at the stars out in the middle of field land, not a soul in sight. The peaceful night after having slayed some bass was perfect.

** After these 16 bass, my largemouth bass total for the year is at 88. The number of bass I have caught has officially surpassed the number of panfish I have caught this year.
