Melons and The Sac River

Instead of three fishing trips I only had two. I feel I did pretty well considering I did NOT get skunked on these last two trips.
On Thursday the 27th I went trout fishing at New Melones with Mark from Northern California Trout aka my Fly mentor. The banks were loaded but luckily we found a good spot. The holiday fishers were out and about with so many people fishing that apparently a fight had broke out just before we got there. We had our lines in the water at around 8:45 and by 9 we had our first to fish on the stringer. Then there was a big pause for about 30 minutes.

Now Mark made it VERY clear that it would be a waste of time to bring fly gear and even though I really wanted to try out my new waders, I left them at home. While at the lake I saw a guy approaching all “ fly-geared up.” Sure enough Mark not only knew the guy but they are in the same fly fishing club. I realize that Mark is the fisherman to know in Amador County. Anyway, Charlie (Marks friend) was casting 30 feet with ease and ended up catching three fish on the fly off of a black wooley bugger. Next time, I am bringing my fly gear just in case! haha

So after 30 minutes or so we started up again. We were really killing the fish which was interesting because the guy to the right of us was getting skunked. A few weeks ago at Collins lake I was the guy getting skunked with people next to me catching fish but not this time. The rig we used was a basic slip sinker rig with rainbow power bait which Mark has really mastered! A couple of old timers were watching us in action and were basically giving the play by play of our fish slaying! A guy who got there a bit after us ended up giving us a couple of fish since he saw we were putting them on a stringer. I almost felt like not taking his fish since we were doing so well but I felt rude rejecting his offer.

With one stringer full, we decided to get a second stringer and fill that one up as well. In the next hour or so we had nine with one to go.  While Mark was getting a fish off of his line, one of his rods started bouncing and so I picked it up and when I set the line, this fish pulled right back! It put up a decent little fight but I ended up winning and pulled up a nice 16 inch planter! Not the biggest trout in the world but the biggest I have ever caught!  We went home with two limits, three of which I barbecued and the others I gave my parents.

Saturday the 28th I went Striper fishing with Ol’ Pops. Striper fishing hasn’t been good to us this year especially since we found out our favorite fishing spot is now closed. We did a bit of recon and found a place under the Main Street bridge in Colusa and gave it a try there. Long story short, we fished four three hours and not even bites. PLENTY of snags though. I did manage to catch a pikeminnow on a slip sinker rig to avoid the skunk.

Well, that was about it for my 2013 fishing experience. Next time I go fishing it will be 2014. Happy New Year Everybody!!

You and Mark just might be the future guides for that area.

  3. I say bring the fly rod and a box of Wooly Buggers or even Wooly Worms. Trout don't often refuse them for any length of time.
