All Weekend Fishing!

This weekend was a great one as are all weekends in which all three days are fishing days. Friday We took some beers and stogies out to the pits to see how they were hitting. Unfortunately they are still slow. 

I did manage a decent bass on a small crankbait and also another small bass and a panfish. The panfish was interesting because it was the first panfish I have ever caught out there. In all still a great day. The pits aren’t hitting the same way they did in the past but it is slowly but surely getting better out there.

Total: 2 Largemouth bass + 1 green sunfish = 3 Fish

Saturday I went river fishing with Ol Pops and my nephew. My nephew doesn’t have the patience for fishing which really stinks because he has a hot hand and he doesn’t even know it! First blood was him with a 10 inch striper. Second was me with another little striper and pops ended up catching one as well. Biggest was a 16 incher that my nephew ended up catching on my rod while I went to net one up for pops…. And Pops’ fish ended up getting away! So none of us got skunked and my nephew caught the most and biggest fish.

Total: 1 Striper

On Sunday night we decided to hit Walter Pond with IPAs and Stogies in hand. It was hot and fishing was slow. We barely got into 3 fish and that was with a lot of effort on our part. I expected there to be a good topwater bite but that didn’t happen either. Even though the moon was almost full we still didn’t get many bites in general… 

Total: 2 bass

Well, that’s pretty much it for now. Hope summer is going well for my fellow bloggers.

3 Trips!

 Unfortunately I have not been keeping up with my blogging but on the bright side, that’s because spring is here and fishing is getting great! I have quite a few trips and a good amount of fish to tell you all about.  I’ll be discussing 3 separate trips in this post with a total of 13 fish.

April 8^th – Started the day at Walter pond fishing with my fly rod and got into quite a bit of blue gills on the fly. I caught them all on a light cahill. As it got a bit darker I switched over to a dark green worm and was able to get into a couple of bass before it got too dark to fish.

Total Fish: 9 bluegill + 2 Largemouth bass = 11 fish

April 10^th – I got together with my newer fishing buddy Moses. A day before Moses and Charles had gotten into a good amount of buckets out at the Legendary Pond so we decided to give it a try. Moses used a wacky worm rig to catch a few small bass and I thought I would finish the day off skunked, even after throwing the entire tacklebox at them. As the sun dipped into the hills I took a River to Sea Swim bait to finally land one small bass which beat the skunk.It wasn't very legendary on this day!

Total Fish: 1 Largemouth bass

April 14^th – Jeremy had the day off so we decided to hit Walter pond and try for some bass. The day was a slow one. We tossed our usual worms at the bass and they wanted nothing to do with them. Instead of hitting our usual spot, we went around the pond and hit other spots. Jeremys buddy Jeff was the first to get a hit and land a bass. Him and Walter had the hot hand and ended up landing 5 bass between the two of them. Jeremy ended the day with two bass and once again I ended the day with a buzzer-beater as we were about to leave!

Total fish: 1 Largemouth Bass

Total fish: 9 bluegill + 4 Largemouth Bass = 13 Fish

I'm Bringing Spin fishin' Back!

I just realized before posting this that this is my first spring fishing trip. Let's make this spring a good one, folks! 

On Sunday we decided to hit davis pond, which we now decided to call, “Walter Pond.” It was pretty windy so I decided against taking my fly rod and only took the spinning rod. I knew that using the spin rod would make it easier.

Upon getting there I went to some topwater lures. A popper, a torpedo, and a jiter bug. No interest, which surprised me because they were all over the small popper . After that I switched to some ratl traps and crankbaits. Still, no takers. Jeremy decided to try some top water as well and he wasn’t having any luck either. A bit later Walter arrived and he started fishing with a senko.  We have had a lot of success with a green senko here so it didn’t surprise me to see Walter be the first to catch a fish. A bit later Jeremy switched over to the green senko and he caught a couple so what else could I do but follow their lead.

A bit later I got into my first bass. It was a nice skinny looking fish with a big head which made me think it was a post-spawn bass. A bit later I switched spots, cast into the cattails and caught a second bass. Now it was all coming together. Every few casts was a strike or a fish.

During one of my casts I tossed the senko into the cattails, it dropped and I had a fish on. This one felt a little heavier and when I pulled it to shore I realized it was a fatty. When I lifted it out of the water I realized it was a female with a belly full of eggs. I  took a couple of pictures and made sure she was swimming well before she left.

Towards the end of the night the wind had blown all the slime away and the water was super clear. We could see all kinds of panfish swimming the shallows and chasing our big lures which had hooks  which were way too big for a panfish mouth. And on top of that the wind died down which would have been great for fly fishing!  Oh well, next time I won’t leave home without it!
